Home Treatment for Diarrhea

There are many reasons that you may be experiencing diarrhea. The most common reasons are mild food intolerance, taking antibiotics, and emotional stress. Usually diarrhea will subside within a few days with home treatment, which include the following:

Drink water or a rehydration drink frequently.
Eat small portions of bland food.
Avoid antidiarrheal drugs for the first 6 hours. Diarrhea may speed the recovery of an underlying condition, such as a viral infection.
Use antidiarrheal medications only if there are no other signs of illness, such as fever or severe pain.
Follow the BRAT diet when you are able to tolerate food. This diet includes small amounts of:
bananas
rice
applesauce
dry toast
Avoid milk and other dairy products for several days. Dairy products may irritate the bowel further.
Avoid spicy and fatty foods. The bowel may not be ready to process such foods.
For children, avoid juices and sodas because these may worsen the problem.
